Rudy & Elena doing tile for the first time

Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

Riding to the house today with Elena and Rudy we talked about how we were going to tile the two bath rooms. Neither one of them had ever done tiling but were eager to learn. It turns out that Elena’s parents want her to tile a bath in their house. Rudy wants to do a closet.

Well they learn quick. I got them started with the layout and mixed the thin-set, then let them go. By 2 p.m. they were done. Around 10:30 Robin ( the one with multi colored hair) came to help so I got her started in the master bath. Mike Julian ( the tool shed guy) came by with the new tile (had to buy tile because we did not have enough of the free ones) for the kitchen so we started the kitchen and should be done by Saturday with all the tile.

Tonight at dinner I had 4 women volunteer to help. Is it the return of the babes?

Elena

Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

There were only 4 of us on the job today, Elena, Eddie, Suzanne, and me (David). Eddie stayed long enough to hang another door and trim one side. Elena and I sanded all of the windows and started priming the putty until we ran out of paint. Thought I had another 5 gal. can but it turned to be joint compound. Got a new can from the mold tent. Did anyone go in the mold tent? Do you believe there is a mold tent?
A few more groups have arrived so it is starting to feel normal again. Still waiting for Jim, Joel, Robert, and Art to arrive on the 1st. We are going to start tiling the bathrooms tomorrow. I brought knee pads and motrin, but I know it will not help. Rudy is going to help (he is a wrestler and he loves pain). Both Rudy and Elena have returned till Christmas. Kids just love it here. Us old folks love it here because of the kids. Never spent this much time with my own.

John & Yvon

Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

David Valkenaar reporting:

It was cold last night — cold and windy today. According to Cynthia, it will be in the teens tonight and a hard freeze is expected.

Last night and this morning, Eddie recruited Yvon (Luc’s dad), Sean, Michelle, Jodi, Kelly, and John (a new guy) to help with Cynthia’s house. His plans were to install the window trim and get started on the tile floor installation. And, of course, Doug came to finish the siding on the porch.

I left early to drop Kelda at the bus station. I took Yvon (Luc’s father) and John. (John is a new man from Vermont. According to Michelle, someone from the Pub sent him to HOGC as a place to sleep, eat and work.) So the good news was, we had a large crew and expected to get a lot of work done.

We opened up the house and got the electricity strung. Eddie arrived with with the rest of the crew and some tools. Cynthia met us all with a hug and coffee, as is her usual morning greeting. Doug got busy measuring and cutting the siding to finish the porch. I got busy on mudding the master bath. The rest followed Eddie’s lead and directions and started trimming the windows.

The trim crew immediately ran into problems.

First, the windows need to have foam insulation (the expanding foam kind) installed around them. We had one can and it was not working very well. They did get two or three windows insulated, though.

Next, lots of 1×6 was needed (for window sills and for ripping to fit the frame inside the window boxes) and only a little was on hand.

Next, it was discovered that the windows were not square, so 45 degree mitre cuts did not fit precisely. Eddie showed the crew how to cut the corners at different angles for each corner situation so the corner fit would be tight no matter the angle. Of course, that took a lot of time and often two or three attempts.

I suggested that professionals would cut them all at 45 degrees, then, for the corners that were not tight, caulk and sand them smooth before painting. They would all look the same after painting. But Eddie insisted on “cutting them right.”

Then Eddie had to leave and the trim crew was on its own.

By noon, I had finished mudding and had started caulking. The foam insulation had run out, and the trim crew had completed parts of two windows.

We went to “Salvo” (the Salvation Army lunch site) for lunch. When we got there, the serving tents were empty. Fortunately someone told us they were serving inside because it was so cold and windy. Ewww, was that nice. They had butane heaters roaring and it was cozy warm. They also had a hot lunch! We had steamed rice, a thick, kind of beef and sausage stew to put on top of the rice, fruit cocktail and hot corn bread.

We went back to t he house. Doug went back to the porch siding, Yvonne and I went back to caulking, and the rest went back to installing window trim.

Suddenly Eddie yelled to call the ambulance. John had collapsed and blood was coming out of his mouth!

Sean called 911. Within minutes a fire engine arrived, then a police car, than an ambulance. They determined that John had had some kind of seizure that caused him to pass out. On the way down, he had hit his head and bit his tongue. Though the puddle of blood on the floor looked large, the bleeding was not serious. The emergency crews were concerned, though, because John could not answer standard questions. They determined that he should go the hospital for observation and further checking. Though he insisted he did not want to go because he had no insurance and no money, they did take him away in the ambulance.

As we discussed what each of new about John, we put together some info. He had arrived day before yesterday and set up his tent in a grassy area near the bus station. The police rousted him during the night and told him to move on out of town. Michelle and Jodi met him at The Pub last night. Michelle brought him — a bit drunk — to HOGC. The bosses said he could stay here for the night but he must move out (with everyone else) the next day. At breakfast he volunteered to go with Eddie to help at Cynthia’s house.

After the excitement trim crew came to me and asked what they could do since they were out of 1×6 and out of insulating foam. Eddie got back from his meeting and told them there was nothing else to do, so they all went back to base. Doug and I stayed and finished the siding on the porch. (I’m afraid the top board has to be redone though. It is really ugly).

Tonight Chris (no two man) made a Thai dinner. White rice with a tofu and mushroom sauce to top the rice with. Ummm ummm good!

More people are leaving tomorrow, and Eddie announced he is sick and is taking tomorrow off.

Siding crew
Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

Breakfast at seven, round up the crew, where is Mark? 8:05 turn right on Pass Road. Slow down for the crossing guard ( he is there every week day but we never see anyone cross). Turn right at the Electric Maid Bakery ( Electric Maid was a stove in the early 20 ‘s). Not much on this road, just a girly bar. Across the tracks , turn left at the coast ( US 90). Not much has changed, a few signs for a developer, same old destruction. Pass the casinos and the Hard Rock. Turn left at Lee street, neat stone house, wonder what kind of damage it had? Across the tracks again, a crew is already on the roof of Mr. George’s house. Pass the Biloxi Little Theater (remember “Rent “?), what a hoot. There is Yankey Stadium and the Salvation Army tent, turn right on Division. Almost to the end look for a sign for the Boys and Girls Club ( the sign is there but the club was removed near the end of August 2005)…we’re on site.

The siding crew is there, so are John & Ann ( they will be driving north on Saturday, will miss them a lot ). The color looks nice in the day light. Make a few repairs on the eaves, add 2 vents near the MB. I want to start the tub, Doug needs a new saw blade and some bead board for the porch. To the store again. Left on Bay View, pass the lumber yard (no, they don’t have any). Ralph, remember that bundle of shingles we wanted to take? Cost us $18.00. North on 110, over the bay west on I-10. First exit, go left for Home Depot. Shop, go back with my eyes closed.

Everyone is working except me. Lunch at Salvo, now the tub. David V read the directions, good, I was so ready for this to be over I would have blown it. Doug is having a fit with the ceiling of the porch, don’t say anything! Let’s go home and finish the porch tomorrow. I try to explain how I think the screen will work to Dan. He’s confused, I’m confused. They started the porch without a complete plan. Painting went nice today, only the porch to go. Ann will you touch up my finger prints in the trim? Found out hand cream will take it off.

Tomorrows blog will written on the airplane home. We need another week of trim and floors. I’ll be back for one last week, join me.

Painting crew du Jour

Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

Tonight is Open Mike night so this will be short.

Lilly’s and Luke’s rooms are painted. All the wood floors have a coat of varnish. The siding is done except the porch. 2 sides of the house are painted (base).

The plumbers fixed the vent pipes again. They also cut the holes for the faucets in the MBR tub surround. I also cut out the light switch in the study that was buried. That makes 3 electric boxes we covered up. I hope there are no surprises when they turn on the power.

I let Lilly walk on the new floor to see her room color, she loved it. Luke also likes his but he did not cry like Lilly.

Nancy, Ann, John, Brittany, David, Dora
Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

Once again we were awakened by thundering rain and a tornado warning. So we started late (9 am) and were recalled back to base, where we stayed till 1 pm. When we got back to the house we noticed the roof of the next door neighbor’s house was partly blown off. Her carport is now a large metal pretzel. Cynthia said it happened at 6 am and it sounded like train. There was a shed across the street that is now a block away.

With a late start we (John & David) finished sanding the pecan floors and Ann put on one coat of sealer. Mark and his crew of Nancy, Dora, Brittany, and David V continued caulking the outside siding and trim. I went to Home Depot one more time to return the sander and buy the exterior paint (Golden Pond). All of the colors are now picked out and we will start painting the outside tomorrow. We also are going to paint the kids room and put on another coat of varnish.

At dinner Mark gave us a demonstration of how to wear a dust mask. He also cooked dinner. What will he dazzle us with tomorrow? Today was Brittany’s last day. She will leave for California to enroll in a masters program in nursing. We will miss her, so will Lilly. They have become like sisters.

Till tomorrow…

Sanding painting crew

Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

Almost done with the floor sanding ( we started at 6:15 today)…what a bear. Most everything is painted except the kids’ rooms. In the MBR they used the free brown paint for one wall and a mixture of brown and ceiling white on the others. The cabinets are finally ordered. We will put a utility sink in the kitchen so they can move in and instal them later. All of the colors are picked out, thanks to all of the ladies that helped. We have had a lot of interest from other volunteers ( all women) to help us paint but had to turn them down because it is going to rain and we don’t have that much to do inside until the floors dry.

During the nightly song contest Mark and Tina did a dance to a Michael Jackson number. Mark brought down the house.

And then there were four

Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

Only four gals left, but they work hard. As you can see the LR & kitchen are painted. All the ceilings are done after Tina found the paint roller ends so Mark could use the big roller. David Valkenaar (a civil engineer from San Mateo who knows Bill Hoeft) and John trimmed the sheet-rock around the windows so we can trim them.

We rented a floor sander and started in the Boys’ room. For those who were here in the beginning, believe me when I say it took half a day to sand and it is still not flat. Can’t wait to get in the LR. I hope Harley’s patch work is easier in the LR.

The siding crew turned the corner to the front porch and claim they need 2 more hours. Still waiting for the plumber to finish the MB tub. Will someone call Tony?

Cynthia loves the colors so far, thanks to Toby and ( I for get help pick them.) Still waiting for a color for Lilly’s room. Maybe Brittany will help her. Rudy is cooking B’fast tomorrow, you will be up by 7AM.

Lilly & Brittany do the girls closet

Originally uploaded by bridge to biloxi.

Sorry for the delay in posting…with 100 women (was it only 100?) asking me what to do, then not doing it like I requested…no, that must have been a dream. I did feel like I was sinking in quick mud, but they came to my rescue. The rescue came in the form of Mark Olalor and the babes painting up a storm. They went through 20 gallons of primer by 3:30 and we could not get back from Home Depot with more in time. Monday we have only 2 gals left (Kathy and Chris). Saturday, in addition to painting, Eddie and his crew along with Moose (from Canada) replaced the decking on the front porch and installed the screen door. Siding is now on 3/4 of the house. We will start sanding the floor on Monday and more painting. It is now Sunday evening, Toby just made her stand-by flight home, so I am writing this and reflecting on the week. It was like Extreme Makeover…everyone was working so hard and so fast. We had so many people in the house sometimes it was faster to go out the back door and walk around the house than go through it.
